Use of lime in building and agriculture, other application of lime

The lime paste is a building material of extensive application. It is actively used both in building, and in agriculture. It is intended for whitewashing of premises, borders, for preparation of building mortars, and also for treatment of trees and vineyards.

Use of lime in building:

1.     Internal and external whitewashing.

2.     Preparation of finishing and masonry mortars.

3.     Preparation of coloring mixtures.

  Use of lime in agriculture:

1.     Liming (neutralization) of soils.

2.     Treatment (whitewashing) of trees, vineyards.

3.     Disinfection of cattle-breeding premises, cages.

4.     Preparation of Bordeaux mixture.

  Other application of lime:

1.     Scale prevention in boilers.

2.     Water softening.

Preparation of lime mortars and Bordeaux mixture

For preparation of lime mortars use 1 part of lime paste to 3 parts of sand.

The mixture is thoroughly mixed up with addition of water until the working consistency is obtained.

For preparation of Bordeaux liquid use one part (by weight) of lime paste and one part (by weight) of copper sulphate. Dilute the mixture with water until the working consistency is obtained.

The resulting mixture should be blue without mechanical impurities. The reaction should be neutral.

Check up with a piece of litmus paper or drip some drops on a clean sheet of ferrous metal, there should be no rust.

A method of preparation of the whitewashing mortar

Mix the packet contents with water in a ratio depending on the type of works. Add coloring matter if necessary, stir, then make whitewashing. If whitewashing is made with a spray gun, it is necessary to filter the mixture through cheesecloth or capron. It is desirable to stir the mortar periodically during the operation. In order to avoid a chemical burn watch that the paste and mortar do not get into your eyes and on exposed body parts. If there was a contact wash with water at once. In case of a burn consult a physician immediately.

Perform the work wearing rubber gloves and goggles.

Applying for other purposes, use corresponding instructions. Frozen lime paste does not lose its quality.

Thaw at room temperature.

Features of application of the lime paste at preparation of masonry and finishing mortars

When using masonry mortar with lime paste, the mortar acquires plasticity, additional adhesion ("fastening"), and also a lighter color hue. The mortars with use of lime paste harden much faster and possess stronger durability, density and water resistance.

When using lime in masonry mortars, shrinkable properties of the given mortar decrease, that is less cracks appear on the junctions.

Under influence of moisture the lime paste has no effect on secretion of salts on the junctions as when adding into the mortar there is the process of its carbonation, and it turns into a solid material.

Features of application of lime paste in preparation of finishing mortars

For application of the plaster layer mortars are used consisting of astringents and sand. The astringent is the main component of the mortar, providing it with plasticity at first, i.e. a possibility of application on the surface with subsequent leveling, and then the required durability. Cement, lime, clay, gypsum can be applied as the astringent. In conjunction with the sand they create a strong and reliable plaster layer. Depending on the astringent, the usual plaster can be cement, lime, clay, plaster, and also mixed, cement-lime, cement-clay, etc.

Cement and cement-lime mortars are used for plastering of walls in premises with raised air humidity such as bathrooms, kitchens, etc. Lime, cement-lime and lime-gypsum mortars are recommended for plastering of the walls in dry premises. Clay and lime-clay mortars are used for plastering of wooden and stone walls in regions with an arid climate and in dry premises. The formulations of finishing mortars are specified below in the table. Because plastering is executed, as a rule, in three layers including rendering, primering, and finishing, in the table the formulations are shown taking into account the requirements for each of the layers.

To obtain heat-insulating plasters, lime mortars are used with light fillers of the formulation 1:2-1:3 (lime : filler). As fillers pumiceous or tufaceous fines, sawdust, slags, perlite sand, etc, are used.

Recommended formulations for lime mortars for plastering of internal walls, partitions with relative air humidity up to 60% (in parts by volume):

A white apron for a tree: all about whitewashing of trees

Whitewashing of trees. What is it done for, beauty or use? We will say right away: the white apron of lime on the trunk is far not a festive dress of a tree as many amateur gardeners think, unfortunately. It executes simultaneously a number of complex functions. This white armor is designed to protect the tree from diseases and depredators, to protect from burns and frost-clefts. And these misfortunes fall upon the garden, as you know, in winter days difficult for trees when they are bared, exposed to all winds. During the day nothing protects the bark which is heated up by the sun, like a dark stain on the white snow blanket. At night it is squeezed by the frost and wind. Unable to withstand such drastic temperature changes, the bole wood cracks. In spring numerous depredators and diseases find their food and shelter on the damaged spots of the bark.

To avoid this trouble, experienced gardeners make whitewashing of the trees not in the spring as generally accepted, but in the autumn when the leaves fall down, and the tree prepares for winter rest. But that the lime bandage was not washed away by autumn rains, not disarranged by winter winds, that it was more dense and solid, could resist the bad weather, it is necessary to add 1 kg of usual yellow clay and 300 g of sulphate of copper or iron, a little of flour paste brewed as usual liquid jelly, to the mortar for whitewashing prepared of 2-3 kg of lime paste and a bucket of water.

In the spring the gardener needs only refresh the whitewash, for the armor of such mortar can withstand icy cold and wind, protects the tree reliably from weather falsities, protects from pests and illnesses which chose the tree bark for their winter dwellings. So, do not forget to whitewash the trees in the autumn. For this purpose the lime paste of manufacture of the private enterprise "UAR" will ideally suit to you which is checked up for years by many gardeners.
